There’s a new option available for hair care in the Golden Triangle and it comes with the benefit of helping the next generation of cosmetologists train.

East Mississippi Community College’s cosmetology program salon is open for business, offering full-service hair care to both men and women in the region.

“We’re a full-service salon,” said EMCC cosmetology instructor David Long. “Naturally, the students are in training. We offer haircuts, styles, chemical services, manicures, pedicures and we do sew-in hair.”

The salon is open Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The salon is located in the Douglas Building at EMCC’s Golden Triangle Campus. Walk-ins are welcome. Prices are competitive withe area salons.

“Basically, they’re doing their internship program in-house,” Long said.

Long said cosmetology students at EMCC went through two months of classroom training prior to interning for seven months. Following the training program, students take a licensing exam under the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology before going into the field.

“The students benefit because they get to hone their craft and to put the skills they have been working so hard to learn to use,” Long said. “Our prices are very reasonable and I will be supervising the students to make sure they are doing everything correctly.”

Long is new to EMCC and has worked in the field for 33 years.

“I am a little nervous too but I know I will enjoy it,” said cosmetology student Brooke Hailey of Wahalak. “I probably like coloring hair the most, and cutting hair is fun too.”

Anyone interested in studying cosmetology at EMCC or scheduling an appointment at the salon can call 662-243- 1915.

“I’ve been doing it for 33 years, and it’s been good to me,” Long said. “It feels awesome to get your hair done.”

The cosmetology program falls under EMCC’s career and technical programs.
