The Starkville Board of Aldermen looks to accept the quote for the Highway 12 phase one landscaping project.

Starkville Mayor Lynn Spruill said the quote provided by SGK Landscapes includes drip irrigation, root barriers, trees and low shrubs for the medians on Highway 12.

The funding for this project will not come out of the city's funds, but from the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

"It's not Starkville money, it's MDOT money that was earmarked for the Highway 12 project," Spruill said.

Spruill said this project will make the area of Highway 12 more aesthetically pleasing.

"It's part of our attempt to follow through on a beautification effort," Spruill said. "I think beautification matters, I've said so all along."

Spruill said she hopes the installation of the landscaping will begin immediately,

if the board approves to accept the quote. The only wait time would come from SGK Landscapes getting the products in for installation.

Spruill said small efforts like this project is what will make Starkville a stronger area because people want to be in a place that makes them feel good and has a sense of pride. She specifically named areas like Russell Street and planting medians along Highway 182.

"I think all of that factors into what we're trying to do throughout town," Spruill said. "All of those things come together to try and make it a place where people want to be."
